Our Motherland is a portrait of Constant Kusters: devoted family man and figurehead of the far-right Dutch People's Union. Through an intimate look at his daily life, Our Motherland paints a broader picture of Dutch society and its historical relationship with “the other.”
Blending archival footage of Dutch history with close-up scenes from within the far-right movement, this documentary presents a politician who is visibly pleased to see his ideas increasingly reflected in mainstream discourse.
In doing so, the film holds up a mirror to the viewer. To what extent has our national history laid the groundwork for today’s fear of newcomers?
